The town at the river mouth

A quiet coast with a long memory

Honavar (also spelt Honnavar) sits where the Sharavathi River, the river that plunges over Jog Falls, finally reaches the sea. In the 16th century this was the port of Rani Chennabhairadevi, the 'Pepper Queen' of Gerusoppa upriver, whose pepper sailed from here to Arabia and Europe. Today it is a quiet town of fishing boats, coconut groves and narrow village roads, far from the crowds of Goa.

Come for the backwaters and the beach. You will remember a high-tide boat ride through the mangroves, a night of Yakshagana with drums going till dawn and a fish thali at a highway hotel that has been serving it since 1974.

  • 253metres: the drop of Jog Falls, 68 km up the same river
  • 3,732mm of rain a year, which makes it endlessly green

One river, two wonders

Jog Falls to the Arabian Sea

The Sharavathi River plunges 253 metres at Jog, threads a forested gorge past Gerusoppa (the Pepper Queen's old capital) and slows into mangrove backwaters before it meets the sea at Honavar. Follow it upstream for the best day trip on this coast.

Yakshagana

Gods, demons and drums till dawn

Yakshagana is coastal Karnataka's great theatre: towering gilded crowns, painted faces, a singer (bhagavata) narrating epics from the Mahabharata and Ramayana and the chande drum driving dancers through the night.

Honavar taluk is one of its heartlands. At Gundabala, about 13 km east of town, the Mukhyaprana (Hanuman) temple has its own troupe that performs all night, every night of the season, from roughly December to May. Each show, from about 9 pm to dawn, is a devotee's offering, booked years in advance.

Nearby Gunavante is home to the Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali, founded in 1934 by Keremane Shivarama Hegde, which keeps the northern badagutittu style alive and is accredited by UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage committee.

Before you go

Good to know

Sea safety

The Arabian Sea has strong currents. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches, between the flags. From June to September the sea is closed to swimmers.

On the water

Wear the life jacket on every boat. Book at the jetty, not through roadside agents and agree the route and duration first.

Temples

Dress modestly, leave footwear outside and ask before photographing inside.

Money & network

Town has ATMs and UPI works almost everywhere. Carry some cash for boats, small eateries and village temples.

Tread lightly

Avoid plastic and don't litter. On winter nights keep lights off near fenced turtle nests on the beach.

Monsoon travel

June to September brings over three metres of rain. The Ghats are glorious, but plan around closed beaches and fewer boats.

Questions travellers ask

What is the best time to visit Honavar?

October to February is the best time: dry, sunny days, cool evenings, calm seas and the best conditions for boat rides. October is especially lush, with Jog Falls still full and fewer visitors. June to September is the heavy monsoon. It's spectacular for Jog Falls and the Ghats, but beaches are closed to swimmers and boat trips are limited.

Why is Honavar famous?

Honavar is famous for the Sharavathi River estuary and backwaters, the Blue Flag certified Eco Beach at Kasarkod, the 2,065 m Konkan Railway bridge, the Idagunji Mahaganapati temple nearby and its Yakshagana tradition. Historically it was the pepper port of the 16th-century 'Pepper Queen', Rani Chennabhairadevi of Gerusoppa.

Is Honavar worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you prefer quiet beaches, backwaters and nature to crowds. Honavar is a calm base between Gokarna and Murudeshwar, with Jog Falls a day trip away and it has good homestays.

How many days do I need in Honavar?

Plan 3 to 4 days. Two days cover the river, mangroves, Eco Beach, a boat ride, Apsarakonda and Idagunji. Add a day up the Sharavathi River to Jog Falls and another for Murudeshwar or Gokarna. See our itineraries.

What does the name Honavar mean?

The name is usually read as honnu + ooru, 'golden town' in Kannada. There were never gold mines here, so perhaps it's the golden sunsets and sands.

Which river flows through Honavar?

The Sharavathi River. It rises in the Western Ghats, plunges 253 m at Jog Falls and meets the Arabian Sea at Honavar, forming the estuary and backwaters.

Who was the Pepper Queen?

Rani Chennabhairadevi ruled from Gerusoppa, upriver from Honavar on the Sharavathi River, for more than five decades from about 1552. Her pepper was shipped through Honavar and Bhatkal and the Portuguese called her the Rainha da Pimenta, the Queen of Pepper. She traded with them and fought them, besieging their Honavar fort in 1571. In 2025 India Post issued a stamp in her honour. The Chaturmukha Basadi at Gerusoppa and Mirjan Fort are linked to her era.
