The Sharavathi Kandla Mangrove Boardwalk winds on wooden planks deep into a mangrove forest on the banks of the Sharavathi River, opposite Eco Beach. It's maintained by the Karnataka Forest Department to protect the mangroves and explain why they matter.
Look for Rhizophora with its arching stilt roots and Avicennia with pencil-like breathing roots poking out of the mud, along with fiddler crabs, mudskippers, kingfishers and herons. Signboards along the way explain how mangroves protect the coast from erosion and storms and shelter young fish.
