Seasons
Monsoon in Honavar
From June to October Honavar is waterfall season. Over three metres of rain falls between June and September, the Ghats turn green and Jog Falls roars.

How much rain?
Honavar is one of the wettest places on India's west coast. Average rainfall (IMD, 1991 to 2020):
Jun: 996 mm rain, 24 to 30 °C
Jul: 1,161 mm rain, 24 to 29 °C
Aug: 815 mm rain, 24 to 29 °C
Sep: 366 mm rain, 24 to 30 °C
Oct: 216 mm rain, 24 to 32 °C
Rain is heaviest in July. By late September it eases. October is mostly green and fresh with occasional showers.
What to do
Chase waterfalls: Jog Falls is at its most dramatic from August to October. Apsarakonda and Bangara Kusuma Falls are full too.
Watch the rain from a homestay veranda, drive up the Sharavathi River valley in the mist or watch a train cross the Konkan Railway bridge in a downpour.
Safety in the monsoon
The sea is rough and beaches are closed to swimmers from June to September. Stay off rocks and out of the water. Boat rides are limited. Roads in the Ghats can have landslides after heavy rain, so drive in daylight.
The Konkan Railway runs a slower monsoon timetable during these months, so check train timings before you travel.
What to pack
A rain jacket or poncho, quick-dry clothes, sandals with grip and a dry bag for your phone. Our essentials guide has a full list.
