Practical
Several bank ATMs are in town along the main road. UPI (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm) works almost everywhere, even at small shops. Carry some cash for boats, autos, village temples and the occasional power cut.
Jio and Airtel work well in town and along NH66. Signal fades in the Sharavathi River valley, at Gerusoppa and on the Jog road, so download offline maps before day trips.
230 V, with Indian round-pin sockets (types C, D and M). Short power cuts are common in the monsoon. Most hotels have back-up, many homestays don't.
Drink bottled or filtered water. Most stays will refill your bottle, so you can skip single-use plastic.
Vegetarians eat very well here. Seafood is best from October to May. Fishing pauses during the annual monsoon ban on this coast (1 June to 31 July), so fish is scarcer then.
Bars and licensed shops exist in town and some hotels serve drinks. Several homestays are alcohol-free. Don't drink on beaches or near temples.
Honavar's beaches are local family beaches. Swimwear is fine in the water at Eco Beach, but cover up in town and at temples, where shoulders and knees should be covered.
Honavar is friendly and generally safe. Take the usual care: avoid empty beaches after dark and ask your host to book autos or cabs late at night.
Currents are strong. Swim only at lifeguarded Eco Beach, between the flags and never during the monsoon (June to September), when the sea is closed.
