Islands of Honavar

Between the river and the sea, Honavar has islands of every kind: an island fort, river islands of coconut and areca and a coral island for divers.

Islands of Honavar

Basavaraj Durga

A 19-hectare island fort about 4 km offshore, built in 1590 under Vijayanagara rule and later held by the Keladi Nayakas. Landing is allowed only on Makara Sankranti (around 14 January). The rest of the year, see it from Eco Beach or from a boat. More about the fort.

Mavinakurve

A large river island just upstream of town, with coconut groves, fishing hamlets and homestays. Most backwater boat rides go past it and you can also stay there.

Haigunda Island

A quiet village on an island in the Sharavathi River, about 20 km from Honavar, known for an ancient Yaksha statue from around the 1st to 2nd century CE. More about Haigunda.

Netrani Island

A rocky island off Murudeshwar, about 30 km south. It is one of the best dive sites on India's west coast. Scuba diving at Netrani.
