October to February is the best time: dry, sunny days, cool evenings, calm seas and the best conditions for boat rides. October is especially lush, with Jog Falls still full and fewer visitors. June to September is the heavy monsoon. It's spectacular for Jog Falls and the Ghats, but beaches are closed to swimmers and boat trips are limited.

Honavar is famous for the Sharavathi River estuary and backwaters, the Blue Flag certified Eco Beach at Kasarkod, the 2,065 m Konkan Railway bridge, the Idagunji Mahaganapati temple nearby and its Yakshagana tradition. Historically it was the pepper port of the 16th-century 'Pepper Queen', Rani Chennabhairadevi of Gerusoppa.

Yes, especially if you prefer quiet beaches, backwaters and nature to crowds. Honavar is a calm base between Gokarna and Murudeshwar, with Jog Falls a day trip away and it has good homestays.

Plan 3 to 4 days. Two days cover the river, mangroves, Eco Beach, a boat ride, Apsarakonda and Idagunji. Add a day up the Sharavathi River to Jog Falls and another for Murudeshwar or Gokarna. See our itineraries.

The name is usually read as honnu + ooru, 'golden town' in Kannada. There were never gold mines here, so perhaps it's the golden sunsets and sands.

The Sharavathi River. It rises in the Western Ghats, plunges 253 m at Jog Falls and meets the Arabian Sea at Honavar, forming the estuary and backwaters.

Rani Chennabhairadevi ruled from Gerusoppa, upriver from Honavar on the Sharavathi River, for more than five decades from about 1552. Her pepper was shipped through Honavar and Bhatkal and the Portuguese called her the Rainha da Pimenta, the Queen of Pepper. She traded with them and fought them, besieging their Honavar fort in 1571. In 2025 India Post issued a stamp in her honour. The Chaturmukha Basadi at Gerusoppa and Mirjan Fort are linked to her era.

Mangaluru (IXE, about 180 km, roughly 3.5 hours) and Goa Dabolim (GOI, 180 km, about 3.5 hours) are the nearest. Hubballi (HBX) is another option across the Ghats.

Yes. Honavar (station code HNA) is on the Konkan Railway, with trains from Mumbai, Goa, Mangaluru and Bengaluru, including the Vistadome service from Bengaluru.

Only at lifeguarded Eco Beach, inside the flagged area and only when lifeguards allow it. The Arabian Sea has strong currents and swimming is unsafe during the monsoon. Other beaches have no lifeguards.

Very. Eco Beach has lifeguards, toilets and a play area and the mangrove boardwalk, boat rides, Apsarakonda falls and the areca plantation walk all suit children. Always use life jackets on boats.

Honavar is a calm, conservative small town and generally safe. Use the usual precautions: avoid isolated beaches after dark, book boats at the official jetty and dress modestly at temples.

Auto-rickshaws for short hops (agree the trip first, as there are no meters), local NWKRTC buses and private 'tempo' shared vehicles, or a cab with a local driver for half or full days. See transport.

Yes. Honavar town has several ATMs and UPI payments are widely accepted. Mobile data is good in town, patchier in the forests and on the Ghats roads.

The fish thali (rice, fish curry and a fried fish), rava fish fry, prawns and crab ghee roast, clam and crab sukka; tuppa (ghee) dosa at Mari Bhattara; buns for breakfast and goli baje at tea time; tambuli; and gudbud ice cream. See what to eat.

Rarely. Even in peak season (December and January) the beaches and backwaters are quiet compared with Goa or Gokarna. Weekends and the Christmas to New Year week are busiest, so book stays early then.

Yes, if you come for the rain, the green Ghats and roaring waterfalls such as Jog Falls. Beaches are closed to swimmers from June to September, boat trips are limited and forest trails get slippery, so plan indoor time and carry rain gear.

One day covers the mangrove boardwalk, Apsarakonda, a fish thali, a backwater boat ride and sunset at Eco Beach. See our one-day itinerary, but three to four days let you add Jog Falls, Murudeshwar and Gokarna.

About 460 km. Overnight sleeper buses take around 8.5 hours. The Yesvantpur–Karwar Express with Vistadome coaches runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and takes about 13.5 hours. See Bengaluru to Honavar.

About 180 km north on NH66, roughly 3.5 hours by road or 3 to 3.5 hours by Konkan Railway train.

Gokarna is about 55 km north (1.25 hours), Murudeshwar about 30 km south (45 minutes) and Jog Falls about 68 km east (1.5 hours each way). All three are easy day trips.

Yes. The Yesvantpur–Karwar Express (16515) from Bengaluru has Vistadome coaches and stops at Honavar (HNA). It crosses the Western Ghats between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road by day. Check timings on IRCTC before you book.

The KSRTC bus stand is in the middle of town. Honavar railway station (HNA) is about 5 km north, where autos and cabs wait for trains.

Yes. Local drivers do airport pickups and day trips to Jog Falls, Gokarna and Murudeshwar. See our local cab contacts and agree the route and stops before you set off.

For swimming and families, Kasarkod Eco Beach, which has lifeguards. For a wild sand spit where the river meets the sea, Tonka. For quiet walks, Pavinakurve, Apsarakonda and Ramanagindi.

Yes. The Sharavathi Kandla mangrove boardwalk opposite Eco Beach is open from 9 am to 6 pm every day. Allow about an hour.

Landing is allowed only once a year, on Makara Sankranti (around 14 January), when local families visit the island. The rest of the year you can see it from Eco Beach or on a boat. See Basavaraj Durga.

Indian Ocean humpback dolphins and finless porpoises live along this coast and are sometimes seen near river mouths and rocky points, but sightings are never guaranteed. Read more about dolphins and porpoises.

Yes. The dark coastal skies are best from November to March on moonless nights. HONTARA, a rural observatory and space education centre, is being built in Honavar and is closed during the monsoon. See stargazing.

We suggest staying a little inland. The sandy beaches are turtle nesting grounds, lights harm hatchlings and the shore is eroding. Inland stays are quieter and close to the river and food. Read why we suggest you skip the beachfront stay.

A tall coastal sundae layered with ice cream, fruit, jelly and nuts. Karavali Ice Cream and Malnad Ice Land are both known for it.

Bars and licensed shops exist in town and some hotels serve drinks. Several homestays are alcohol-free. Don't drink on beaches or near temples.

At Gundabala, about 13 km east, the temple troupe performs all night, every night of the season (roughly December to May). The Idagunji troupe from Gunavante also performs across the region.

Drink bottled or filtered water. Most stays will refill your bottle, so you can avoid single-use plastic.

Light cotton clothes. Swimwear is fine in the water at Eco Beach, but cover shoulders and knees in town and at temples.
