Itinerary

A Weekend in Honavar (2 Days)

A two-day Honavar weekend itinerary covering the river and sea, Karikanamma hilltop, Idagunji temple and Apsarakonda.

About this itinerary

Two days let you see both sides of Honavar: the river and the sea on day one and the hills and temples on day two. It suits a weekend trip from Goa, Mangaluru or Bengaluru.

Day one stays close to town. Day two heads inland to Karikanamma Hilltop for sunrise, then south to Idagunji and Apsarakonda. In season, end with Yakshagana at Gundabala.

The plan

  1. River and mangroves

Walk the mangrove boardwalk (from 9 am), visit the year-round spring at Ramatirtha, 2 km from town, then wander Honavar market.

  2. Boats and sunset

A high-tide boat ride from Tarbagil Jetty to the estuary and Tonka, then sunset at Eco Beach and seafood in Kasarkod.

  3. Hilltop sunrise

Sunrise at Karikanamma, about 1,500 ft up and 13 km east, with views over the Sharavathi River to the sea. Then gudbud ice cream at Malnad Ice Land in Areangadi.

  4. Idagunji and Apsarakonda

Ghee dosa at Mari Bhattara, darshan at Idagunji, then Apsarakonda for the falls and sunset from the park.

  5. Yakshagana

In season (roughly December to May), watch the all-night Yakshagana at Gundabala, 13 km from town. Shows start around 9 pm.

Good to know

Karikanamma temple is usually open 7 am to 1 pm and 4 to 8 pm, but the viewpoint is open all day. Carry water for the hilltop. Remove footwear near the tank at Ramatirtha.

Add a third day

Add a day up the Sharavathi River to Jog Falls with our three-day plan, or try the forest trek from Karikanamma to Ondadike.

Where to stay

Stay in or near town so every stop is within half an hour. See homestays, hotels and resorts.
