The same river that meets the sea at Honavar begins its most famous moment 68 km inland. At Jog Falls (once called Gerusoppa Falls) the Sharavathi River drops 253 metres (830 ft) in four distinct streams known as Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. It is often described as India's second-highest plunge waterfall.
The falls are at their wildest from July to October, when mist rises hundreds of feet. In the dry months the flow depends on releases from the Linganamakki dam upstream. Viewpoints at the top give the classic panorama and a long flight of steps leads down towards the base for the fit.
The drive from Honavar up the Sharavathi River valley is half the experience: stop at the valley viewpoint, Samshi bridge and Chaturmukha Basadi on the way.

Tips
- Leave Honavar by 7:30 am to beat weekend crowds.
- Carry a rain jacket even in sunshine because the spray soaks you.
