Auto-rickshaws in Honavar
Tips for getting around Honavar by three-wheeler.
Using autos
Autos are everywhere in Honavar town and at the railway station and bus stand. There are no meters, so agree the trip with the driver before you get in.
Autos are perfect for town hops, such as to the boating jetty, Ramatirtha or the mangrove boardwalk. For Apsarakonda, Idagunji or Karikanamma, a cab for a half day is usually easier.
Late at night and early morning, book an auto through your homestay.
Where autos go
Autos are handy for anything in and around town: the boating jetty at Tarbagil, Ramatirtha (2 km), the mangrove boardwalk, Eco Beach in Kasarkod (4 km), Tonka Beach (5 km) and Honavar railway station at Karki (about 5 km).
For longer trips such as Apsarakonda, Idagunji or Karikanamma Hilltop or for day trips to Jog Falls, Gokarna or Murudeshwar, a cab for a half or full day is easier.
Tips for using autos
Agree the trip and the waiting time before you set off, as autos have no meters. If you want the driver to wait at a beach or temple, say so at the start. Keep small change handy.
At the railway station and bus stand, autos wait outside. Late at night and early in the morning they are harder to find, so ask your stay to book one.
Other ways to get around
North Western Karnataka RTC (NWKRTC) buses link the town with villages and nearby towns; you buy tickets on board. Privately run tempos (shared 'city ride' vehicles) are more frequent and stop when you wave them down. See all transport in Honavar.
