On Haigunda island, upriver from Honavar, the Shri Durgaambika Devi Temple is the village's best-known shrine. It is a simple temple with a tiled roof and a bright yellow front, set among coconut and areca palms close to the Sharavathi River.
Devotees describe the goddess as old and powerful and the setting by the river as the best part of a visit. Festival days bring elaborate flower decorations to the shrine.
Combine it with the ancient Yaksha statue on the island, the Samshi hanging bridge and Bangaramakki for a day up the Sharavathi River.
Tips
- Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering.
- Timings are not fixed. Morning is the safest time to find the temple open.
